Cool Conclave - 2024

iFOREST, in partnership with the Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation, hosted two sessions, Track 5 – Energy-efficient and Planet-friendly Cold Chain Infrastructure and Track 11 – Chilling Out: Advancing Natural Refrigerants and Not-in-Kind Technologies for Eco-Friendly Thermal Comfort Solutions at the Cool Conclave organised by the Indian Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ISHRAE).

The three-day event focused on discussions and deliberations among prominent stakeholders in the cooling sector, making a significant contribution to advancing India’s cooling ambitions. The event focused on critical themes such as decarbonization, achieving net zero emissions, and formulating strategies to reduce carbon emissions.

The session on Energy-efficient and Planet-friendly Cold Chain Infrastructure emphasised the significance of this sector for agriculture and the environment. With the low deployment of CCI in India, the discussions centred on identifying new markets, their obstacles, and emerging CCI technologies, including the role of off-grid cold chains. Discussions around pathways for scale-up focused on possible government interventions and emerging business models to promote accessibility and affordability to support adoption and market scale-up.

In Track 11, the focus was on market-ready natural refrigerant-based cooling and not-in-kind technologies. The discussions covered their current market trends, future outlook, and barriers to wider adoption. Additionally, there were conversations about the importance of cooling without refrigerants by re-engineering building envelopes. Finally, pathways for scale-up through economic, policy, and technological solutions were discussed, emphasizing the significance of BIS standards for natural refrigerants and the role of ICAP.
