Unlocking Renewable Energy Growth in Jharkhand

The International Forum for Environment, Sustainability, and Technology (iFOREST), a leading environmental think tank, convened a media workshop titled, “Enabling Renewable Energy Growth in Jharkhand”, on the 24th of October 2024. The event was held at the Le Lac Sarovar Portico in Ranchi, and journalists from leading national dailies and regional publications were brought together to discuss the potential for renewable energy (RE) in the state.
At the event, iFOREST released a media resource kit presenting substantial potential for solar and wind in Jharkhand:
- A re-assessment of the state’s potential for renewable energy suggests 52 GW of solar and 22 GW of wind (at 150m agl).
- Giridih district, which has over 6,500 sq. m of wasteland (mainly with open-scrub), has the potential for 6.5 GW of solar and key sites for wind installations.
- Further, Mr. Chandra Bhushan, CEO and President, iFOREST, highlighted the growing electricity deficit in Jharkhand, stating, “According to figures published by the Central Electrical Authority (CEA), the electricity deficit in the state is expected to reach 2,764 MUs in 2024 – 20 per cent of the state’s energy requirement. This is the highest expected deficit of any state in India for the financial year.”
