Workshop: Sustainability Frameworks for Coal Mines

The International Forum for Environment, Sustainability & Technology (iFOREST) shared the findings of its latest study on “Sustainability Frameworks for Coal Mines” at a workshop organized by Coal India Limited in Kolkata (CIL) on 5th July 2024.
The workshop on Mine Reclamation and Repurposing and the Learnings for Ensuring a Just and Sustainable Transition” was attended by the Chairman and  Managing Director, CIL and other senior executives of CIL and its subsidiary organisations.

The report evaluated the social experience of complete and progressive closures of coal mines to arrive at the best practices for mine reclamation through three case studies of coal/lignite mines in the states of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Tamil Nadu. With the recent draft Mining Plan Guidelines issued by the Ministry of Coal, the report is opportune to recommend the institution of a Just Transition plan as part of the final mine closure planning process.
