Plastics Management

Overview

Our plastic waste management programme focuses on data-driven research, policy development, and practical tools that strengthen monitoring, compliance, and enforcement. Our work focuses on reducing plastic dependence by promoting circularity in plastic packaging, encouraging the adoption of alternatives, and supporting the effective implementation of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR).
A key contribution has been the development of a plastic waste inventorisation tool and a compliance assurance methodology for the single-use plastic ban. These are being used by Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) and environmental regulators to improve enforcement of plastic waste regulations. By equipping institutions with reliable tools and processes, we help bridge the gap between policy and effective on-ground implementation.
We are also working on strategies to reduce plastic packaging, promote alternatives, and curb plastic leakage into waterways and marine environments. Our efforts include strengthening institutional capacity for research on marine litter and developing practical approaches to prevent plastic pollution at source.
Through training and capacity-building programs, iFOREST supports pollution control boards, ULBs, and other stakeholders in implementing plastic waste inventorisation, compliance monitoring, and EPR systems.
