Environmental Governance

Overview

A key priority for iFOREST is to reform environmental laws and strengthen institutions to more effectively address India’s environmental challenges. We collaborate with Pollution Control Boards, government departments, and industries to build domain-specific knowledge and capacity. Our approach integrates policy and regulatory research with hands-on training to enhance both policymaking and on-ground implementation.
To institutionalise capacity building, we have established the iFOREST Academy, which delivers structured courses and skill development programmes. A flagship initiative is the induction and mid-career training programme for Pollution Control Boards, developed in collaboration with the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and the Skill Council for Green Jobs (SCGJ).
We also partner with industries to support environmental compliance, regulatory innovation, and the adoption of cleaner technologies. A particular focus is on institutionalizing guidelines and regulatory systems, and building capacity in both PCBs and industry for online monitoring of water pollution and air emissions.
In collaboration with the Skill Council for Green Jobs (SCGJ), we are advancing green skilling to create a qualified workforce for the environmental sector, contributing to a just and sustainable economic transition.
Our strategic priorities include skill-based training for regulators, compliance-oriented industry support, green job creation, and strengthening industry–institution partnerships to advance environmental policy and practice.
