Air Pollution

Overview

Our air pollution team focuses on research, solutions, and on-ground implementation in states and cities across India. We develop targeted strategies for key pollution sources such as unmitigated fuel use, MSMEs, and agricultural residue burning—a major cause of seasonal smog in South Asia. We also work on short-lived climate pollutants like black carbon and methane, which degrade air quality and accelerate global warming.
iFOREST partners with state governments to strengthen clean air action through policy formulation, strategy development, and capacity building. We are working with Assam, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra to design and implement tailored solutions. In Uttar Pradesh, we support Varanasi and Lucknow in implementing clean air action plans. In Maharashtra, our focus is on the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, and in Assam, we are assisting Guwahati in developing city-specific strategies. We are also developing strategies to curb construction and demolition dust, control open burning, and support city governments in reforming by-laws.
Our pollution monitoring program integrates cutting-edge technologies such as smart sensors, CEMS, and satellites to provide cost-effective solutions for cities and industries. To ensure long-term impact, we invest in capacity building by training policymakers, regulators, industries, ULBs, and civil society.
