This national stakeholder consultation will bring together policymakers, industry representatives, financiers, technical experts, and end-users to discuss the role of heat pumps in supporting India’s transition to a low-carbon economy. As a large share of heat demand across residential, commercial, and industrial sectors is still met through fossil-fuel-based technologies, heat pumps offer a highly efficient electrification solution with significant potential to reduce energy consumption and emissions. However, adoption in India remains limited due to challenges such as weak market demand, limited domestic manufacturing, lack of harmonised standards, financing barriers, and low awareness among key stakeholders. The workshop aims to build a shared understanding of these barriers, identify priority sectors where heat pumps can be effectively deployed, examine enabling conditions such as policy support, financing, and supply chains, and develop actionable pathways to accelerate the scale-up of heat pump adoption across key sectors in India.
