Just Transition to Support Green Growth and Inclusive Climate Action in Maharashtra

On June 25, 2025, iFOREST, in partnership with the Government of Maharashtra’s Department of Environment and Climate Change, hosted ‘Just Transition to Support Green Growth and Inclusive Climate Action in Maharashtra’. The conference marked the launch of India’s first Regional Just Transition Investment Plan for the Chandrapur–Nagpur–Yavatmal (CNY) region.

With coal production projected to decline by 55% and thermal power capacity by 23% over the next decade, the Plan outlines a 10-year roadmap to transition the region from coal dependence to a green economy. It identifies three Economic Development Nodes—Bhadrawati–Wani, Rajura–Chandrapur, and Umrer—where 3,600 hectares of coal mine land can be repurposed into green industrial hubs, tapping into the region’s 37 GW renewable energy potential. This shift could unlock ₹5.4 lakh crore in green investments, generate 3.4 lakh jobs, and boost regional GDP by 4% by 2035.

The Mumbai launch featured key dignitaries such as Smt. Sujata Saunik, Chief Secretary, Government of Maharashtra; Shri Praveen Pardeshi, Chief Economic Advisor to the Chief Minister; Shri Abhijit Ghorpade, Director, State Climate Action Cell; Anandji Prasad, Technical Director, Western Coalfields Ltd. and Shri Prashant Girbane, Director General, Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, also took part in the panel discussions.
