Senior Programme Associate/Programme Manager, Just Transition (Public Policy Expert)

iFOREST is inviting applications from experienced professionals/public policy experts for the position of Senior Programme Associate/Program Manager for the organization’s flagship initiative on Just Transition. The position is focussed on public policy research and deliberations, and candidates with suitable background and experience are encouraged to apply.


iFOREST, is an independent non-profit environmental research and innovation organisation. Started by a group of renowned scientists and environmentalists, it seeks to find, promote and scale-up solutions for some of the most pressing environment–development challenges.

The urgency of climate action and transitioning to a low-carbon economy requires a comprehensive and collaborative action. This also will require planning for a just transition in all fossil fuel related sectors that will be impacted by the clean energy transition. Just Transition is a core engagement area of iFOREST, on which the organization is working on a cross-cutting manner. iFOREST is taking a multipronged approach including, research, policy engagement, public outreach and capacity building. Our engagement spans across sub-national, national and international levels, and involves a range of stakeholders. Since 2020, iFOREST made significant strides in building the just transition discourse in India, and in the context of global climate action. action. The team had published some of the most seminal works on just transition in the context of India’s fossil fuel economy and regions. In June 2021, India’s first comprehensive platform to work on just transition—India Just Transition Centre (IJTC)— was launched. The Centre endeavors to build the just transition discourse in India, and enhance its understanding from the perspective of the global South. The Centre’s work is also guided by eminent members of the Parliament, economists, development professionals, finance experts, who remain as advisors to IJTC.


The suitable candidate will be expected to take leadership in research and stakeholder engagement related to various policy, regulatory and governance issues, and other related matters, pertinent to the issue of just transition.

Following are the key competencies and responsivities

  • Excellent research skills, including data-driven policy research.
  • Excellent analytical skills, with the ability to comprehend interdisciplinary matters related to just transition and climate action.
  • Prepare high-quality reports, analytical research papers, policy briefs, analytical opinion pieces, etc. with clarity in expression of thoughts
  • Excellent communication skills, and ability to engage with experts and high-level stakeholders in government ministries/agencies, industry, etc. with maturity and finesse.
  • Engage and respond to policy matters in a timely manner.
  • Ability to lead research projects and guide junior team members effectively.
  • Convene high-level and high impact meetings, events to build on policy and public engagement.
  • Remain flexible to work around stiff deadlines,


  • Candidates with background in public policy, law, environmental policy, political science, and other related disciples are encouraged to apply.
  • A minimum of Master’s degree in the relevant disciples is a must.

Work Experience

  • A minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience in think tanks/reputed institutes is highly desirable.
  • For candidates with a PhD degree, at least 5 years of post-PhD work experience is required.
  • Proven track record of publications, impact reports, is necessary.
  • Evidence of high-level engagement with stakeholders.


Competitive salary as per candidate’s experience and proficiency. Final designation of successful candidate will be based on qualification and experience.
