Senior Programme Associate, Just Transition and Climate Change

iFOREST is inviting applications from experienced professionals for the position of Senior Programme Associate for working on the socio-economic dimensions of energy transition. The suitable candidate will be engaged with the organization’s flagship programme on Just Transition, a core aspect of climate change action, clean energy transition, and sustainable economic development


iFOREST, is an independent non-profit environmental research and innovation organisation. Started by a group of renowned scientists and environmentalists, it seeks to find, promote and scale-up solutions for some of the most pressing environment–development challenges.

The urgency of climate action and transitioning to a low-carbon economy requires a comprehensive energy transition. This also will require planning for a just transition in all fossil fuel related sectors that will be impacted by the clean energy transition. Just Transition is a core engagement area of iFOREST, on which the organization is working on a cross-cutting manner. iFOREST is taking a multipronged approach including, research, policy engagement, public outreach and capacity building. Our engagement spans across sub-national, national and international levels, and involves a range of stakeholders. The organization has also launched the India Just Transition Centre (IJTC) in June 2021, which is the first comprehensive platform in India to work on the issue. With a team of experienced professionals from cross cutting domains, and expert advisors and affiliates, even in the short span since its incorporation in 2019, iFOREST has managed to make notable contributions in the field of just transition and the overarching agenda of an inclusive climate change action.

Qualification & Work Experience 

  • Master’s degree in (relevant) social sciences/public policy/development planning or related (minimum). Science-cum-policy combination in background desirable, though not essential for the right candidate.
  • A minimum of 7 years of work experience post-Master’s degree that includes field work and social surveys, and at least some evidence of leading responsibility in preparing major reports, policy briefs, and managing coordination/communication with stakeholders. For candidates with a PhD, at least 5 years of post-PhD work experience is required. Some experience in energy transition will be a bonus.

Required Competencies/Expectations

  • Excellent understanding of environment and development issues in India and the workings of government agencies/departments at the centre, state and district levels.
  • Planning, coordinating and conducting survey-based research.
  • Ability to take lead responsibility in project management and coordination/communication with varied stakeholders.
  • Ability to write major reports of professional quality with analytical skills to contextualize findings from primary/secondary research.
  • Ability to write short policy papers/articles independently with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to travel for project work/field research independently as and when required.


Competitive salary as per candidate’s experience and proficiency. Final designation of successful candidate will be based on qualification and experience.
